Living with autism can bring its own unique set of challenges. From difficulty with social interactions to sensory sensitivities, navigating the world can be overwhelming at times. Add anxiety into the mix, and it’s easy to see how the daily struggle can feel insurmountable.

Emily, a 28-year-old woman from California, has been living with autism and anxiety for as long as she can remember. However, she has made remarkable strides in her journey towards anxiety recovery while embracing her authenticity and advocating for others like her.

“I think a lot of people don’t understand the unique intersection of being autistic and dealing with anxiety,” Emily explains. “It’s like a constant battle between needing routine and predictability, and yet feeling overwhelmed by that very structure.”

For Emily, the key to anxiety recovery has been embracing her authentic self and finding tools and strategies that work specifically for her. She has learned to recognize her triggers and implement coping mechanisms, such as deep breathing exercises, sensory tools, and creating a calming environment.

In addition to developing her own coping strategies, Emily has found strength and support in the autistic community. “Finding people who understand and accept me for who I am has been incredibly empowering,” she says. “In those spaces, I can be authentically myself without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.”

One of the most important aspects of Emily’s anxiety recovery journey has been developing a strong support system. She has surrounded herself with understanding friends and family members who respect her needs and provide encouragement during challenging times.

In addition to leaning on her support system, Emily has found solace in artistic expression. “Art has been a form of therapy for me,” she shares. “It allows me to channel my emotions and create something beautiful out of my struggles.”

Emily’s journey towards anxiety recovery has not been without its setbacks, but she continues to persevere and inspire others along the way. She advises anyone facing similar challenges to seek out resources and community support, and to be unapologetically true to themselves.

“Recovery looks different for everyone, but the most important thing is to honor your own journey and find what works for you,” Emily says. “It’s okay to struggle, and it’s okay to ask for help. There is strength in vulnerability, and there is beauty in embracing your authentic self.”
